The Museum of the Royal Regiment of Canada is located next to the Royals’ WO’s and Sgt’s Mess on the second floor at the east end of Fort York Armoury. There is a side door entrance to this Mess as well as an entrance from the balcony. This allows the NCO’s to extend their social functions into the Museum area when the Museum Staff are also invited to the attend the Mess function.
The Museum Staff consists of Captain Bruce Barbeau as Curator, Captain David Bennett as Director, and Major Bob Bennett as the Regimental Historian. There are no honorariums for any of the staff. All work is voluntary. The Royal Regiment of Canada Association gives the Museum a small annual operating budget. Most years the Regimental Foundation also gives the Museum a small operating budget. These funds are for procurement of new artifacts, framing, maintaining and cleaning of the Museum.
The usual hours of operation are the Thursday night training period of 1900 hours to 2230 hours. If contacted in advance the Museum can be opened for viewing by appointment. In the past school groups, Boy Scout Troops, and Cadet Corps have toured the Museum. The usual visitors to the Museum are R. Regt. C. personnel who have a few free minutes during the Thursday night training. New Recruits are given time to learn some Regimental History by having tours of the Museum built into the Recruiting process. Parents of Recruits are encouraged to view the Museum in this Recruiting process and/or during the night their son or daughter is sworn into the Regiment.
There are artifacts and weapons on display covering all eras in the history of the Regiment. There is a general chronological flow of these displays in a clockwise direction around the room.
The Museum was officially opened by HRH Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, in 1996. The Museum is always proudly displayed to any visiting Very Important Person (VIP) be they military or civilian.
