The Regiment trains throughout the year, but mainly from September until May. During the summer, trained members may be selected for career courses or may be tasked to act as an instructor in order to train more junior members.
Recruit training takes place in two separate phases during the year. The first phase occurs from September to May, during which the Regiment trains on a part-time basis averaging the equivalent of four days a month. Training activities include general knowledge of military matters, handling firearms, orienteering, first aid, field craft, military law, physical education, the history and role of the Canadian Forces, drill and discipline.
The second recruit training phase is given on a full-time basis between June and August. During this period, professional occupational military training is given in Canadian Forces installations.
Once basic training has been completed, employment is possible, on a voluntary basis, in Regular Force units assigned to operational missions. You may also be called upon to serve the local and national community in crises (such as floods, ice storms or forest fires).
