What A Soldier Left Behind - written and sung by MCpl Elton Adams
"What A Soldier Left Behind" by MCpl. Elton Adams is a song about a soldier, written by a soldier to honour and commemorate Canadian soldiers and their families. We first heard Elton sing "What A Soldier Left Behind" in the fall of 2007 as he was preparing to deploy on a seven-month tour to Afghanistan. Hearing the song's message and seeing the impact it had on Elton's fellow soldiers, The RCA Band asked band member Sgt Martin Walters to write an arrangement of the song, which we have performed many times at home and abroad.
MCpl. Elton Adams grew up in Roddickton, Newfoundland surrounded by a family of talented singers and musicians. He joined The Canadian Forces at the age of seventeen, serving as a gunner with the First Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, deploying to Bosnia in 2000. After six years in the Artillery he became Military Policeman and deployed to Afghanistan in 2008. While in Afghanistan he performed, "What A Soldier Left Behind" with Canadian band Blue Rodeo at a support the troops concert. He has received the Chief of Defense Staff Commendation and 6 coins of excellence for his music contributions to the Canadian Forces.
