A. The recruiting process is designed to select applicants who will be suitable for training and subsequent employment within the Canadian Forces. So, the good news is that if you made it through recruiting, you can make it through Basic Training, also known as the Basic Military Qualification (BMQ). Should you be selected for the Band of the Ceremonial Guard, your BMQ course will be made up of candidates just like you, musicians. You will develop bonds with your course-mates and will find the tasks easier working as a close-knit team. While the course is demanding, you will see the benefits (such as physical fitness) and learn skills applicable to civilian life.
A. The Band of the Ceremonial Guard has a primary function of providing musical support for the Changing of the Guard ceremony on Parliament Hill each morning. While we do perform for many other events and functions throughout the season, your work schedule will never be such that it denies you adequate personal time. Individual practice, as well as forming small ensembles with your fellow musicians, is strongly encouraged. There are a few practice facilities provided, and practicing in your room is permitted between the hours of 10h00 AM and 10h00 PM.
A. While on BMQ, you will be staying at the training facility in barracks. For the remainder of the summer you will be assigned a residence room at Carleton University, most likely with a roommate. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and you will be living with your fellow musicians for the duration. Food at both locations is provided at a cafeteria, and all special dietary needs will be taken into consideration. Accommodations and food are provided to you free of charge.
A. Absolutely. The Band of the Ceremonial Guard performs in many different capacities, requiring many different genres of music. We have a large library of concert music including orchestral transcriptions and classic wind ensemble pieces. Of course, as a military organization marches are an important part of our repertoire, but we make an effort to provide variety and interest to our programs.
A. During BMQ you will follow a strict physical training (PT) regimen to build up your fitness and endurance. This continues into the training phase of Ceremonial Guard. It is important to be in good physical condition, as the job is demanding. Fitness and strength will help prevent injuries later in the season and improve your endurance while on parade. Once through the training phase, regular PT will continue throughout the public duties season. While it may not be as intense as the training phases, it is necessary to maintain the standard that was already reached.
A. At present, the Director of Music does accept recorded auditions. However, it is not recommended. Because of the nature of the job, it is important that the staff reviewing the auditions have the opportunity to meet the candidates. In extenuating circumstances, a recorded audition may be accepted, but it is preferable that you perform a live audition. If this is the only possible option, please contact us by email or by phone at (613) 990-1545 for details.
