Unit Composition
Have you ever wondered how many personnel are in a platoon or a section? If so, then this page will provide you with a basic introduction to some of the formations that you can expect to find in the Canadian Army.
For more info on the symbols for and role of infantry, armour and other units, check out Types of Units.
Section
An infantry section is made up of 8 personnel and is commanded by a sergeant.
Platoon
A platoon is made up of 36 personnel or three sections (rifle sections in the example above). A lieutenant commands a platoon.
Troop
A troop is composed of 16 personnel. A lieutenant also commands a troop.
Company
A company is made up of three or more platoons. Approximately 148 personnel work in a company. A major commands a company.
Squadron
There are four troops in a squadron, which is typically made up of 68 personnel. A major commands a squadron.
Combat Team
In a combat team, you will find at least an infantry company and a tank squadron (approximately 250 personnel). The team is commanded by a major.
Battle Group
In a battle group, you might find two combat teams (infantry and armour), artillery and combat engineers (approximately 750 personnel). You might also find attached air assets, as well as support elements depending on the task the battle group must accomplish. A lieutenant-colonel is usually in command.
The organization of a battle group is flexible and can be restructured to adapt to any changes in the situation and may be different depending on the mission that must be accomplished.
