Types of Units

There are six unit types in the Canadian Army: infantry, armour, engineers, artillery, combat support and signals. The symbols displayed to the left of each type are the standard symbols used by all NATO countries.

The Infantry

The infantry are the primary fighters and the backbone of the combat arms team. Their role is to close with and destroy the enemy. Armour

Armour symbol

Engineers

Engineer Symbol
Engineers ensure that friendly forces can move around in their area of operations while denying the enemy the ability to move. They need a combination of combat and construction skills to build bridge and airfields, conduct demolitions and detect minefields.

Artillery

Combat Support

Symbol for combat support.
Logistics plays a crucial role in the provision of equipment, service support (transportation and food) and supplies (ammunition and clothing). Signals
