1 Combat Engineer Regiment (1 CER) is a Regular Force regiment of the Canadian Military Engineers. It is located in the Patton Building at CFB Edmonton, and is assigned to 1 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group.

Combat Engineers ensure that troops can live, move, and fight on the battlefield. They also perform construction and maintenance tasks, operate vehicles and equipment in support of engineer operations, and maintain field installations and facilities.

The Regiment is organized into an Administration Squadron which includes a Regimental Headquarters, and four other subunits including two Field Squadrons, an Armoured Squadron, and a Support Squadron. The Regiment maintains combat diving, airborne, Counter-IED and heavy equipment Capabilities to name a few.

1 CER has served Canada around the world and at home. Overseas, 1 CER operated in Kuwait in 1991, Former Republic of Yugoslavia in the 1990s and in Cyprus and Kosovo. For the past decade, 1 CER has been deploying elements to the Afghanistan mission including the deployment of an armoured troop with every rotation. 1 CER is supporting the training mission in Afghanistan, OP ATTENTION. Domestically, 1 CER has provided support during natural disasters and major events.

History

This Regular Force regiment originated in Chilliwack, British Columbia on 17 June 1977, when 1st Combat Engineer Regiment was authorized to be formed. 1st Combat Engineer Regiment's date of origin is not traced to the formation date of the 58th Independent Field Squadron, RCE as lineage is traced from the formation of unit, not sub-unit, sized organizations, ie. regiments and battalions.
