The New Brunswick Revenue Office provides the following information:

Drivers Licences

All valid licences issued by Canadian jurisdictions, states of the United States, or Canadian Forces Europe authorities must be exchanged upon moving to New Brunswick.

Valid Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island licences are exchanged free of charge, except for photo licenses that are optional.

Vehicle Registrations

All out-of-province registrations and plates must be exchanged upon moving to NB. Current NS and PEI registrations for passenger cars are exchanged free of charge. The cost of registration is determined by the curb weight of the vehicle.

Valid insurance must be presented at the time of registration.

Vehicles not already displaying a NB Safety Inspection must obtain it within l4 days after registration. The only exception is that valid NS and PEI Inspections are honoured until they expire, at which time a NB Inspection must be obtained.

Settler's Effects

Passenger cars, motorcycles, trailers and light trucks having a gross mass not exceeding 4309 kg may be brought into NB by an individual without payment of tax providing:

  1. the registered owner has resided outside the province for a period of l83 days or more; and
  2. the registered owner has owned the vehicle registered in his/her name for a period of 3l days or more.

All commercial vehicles and vehicles having a gross mass in excess of 4309 kg are taxable. For further information regarding vehicle taxation, telephone (506)453-2404.

Transfer of Ownership

If you have purchased a vehicle, the procedure for having it registered in your name is as follows:

  1. have previous owner sign-off the registration and surrender same to you with a bill of sale;
  2. present registration, bill of sale, and proof of insurance in your name to the Revenue Office;
  3. out-of-province plates must be surrendered before NB plates are issued;
  4. passenger cars and light trucks must display a valid NB Safety Inspection (valid NS and PEI inspections are also acceptable) at the time of transfer of ownership, and in the case of such vehicles selling for $1,000 or less, the inspection must not be more than 30 days old; and
  5. NB Tax is due and payable at the time of transfer. The rate is l5% of the fair value of the vehicle.
