CFB Kingston K2K 24 Hour Spin-a-thon
About the Event
Experience 24 hours of high energy! Spin Bikes and static trainers, as many as we can manage,
will cycle around the clock and around the world from Kingston to Kandahar and all Canadian Forces
deployed operations en route. Add raising funds for Soldier On and the
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) Program at Providence Care,
big screen entertainment, live bands in Kingston’s landmark K-Rock Centre to the Spin Motivators,
special guests and you have an event you’ll never forget.
1200hrs 5th June 2010 to 1200hrs 6th June 2010
How it Works
For 24 consecutive hours, teams will spin in support of Soldier On and Providence Care.
Each team will have from one (not for the faint hearted) rider to a maximum of 24 riders,
riding relay style. The minimum pledge of $500.00 per team secures a Spin Station that
includes the use of a supplied Spin Bike if required. Riders are encouraged to raise and
collect additional donations in support of this event.
Prizes will be rewarded to team and individuals with most donations collected!
What is Soldier On?
Soldier On was formalized in 2007 to contribute to optimizing the functional independence of
CF personnel with a physical or psychological disability by delivering services that support
their full and active participation in physical activity, recreation and sport.
What is the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) Program?
If you’ve had a stroke, brain injury or spinal cord injury, one of the final stops in your
program of care is likely to be the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) Program at
Providence Care’s St. Mary’s of the Lake Hospital.
The program includes 46 inpatient beds where the average length of stay is 35 days, and a
busy outpatient program that manages up to 40,000 patient visits a year through a wide
range of clinics, including Musculoskeletal Neurological, Respiratory and Amputee Rehabilitation,
Vocational Rehabilitation, and the Regional Community Brain Injury Services. The goal of the
PMR program is to restore the patient to the best quality of life with the greatest possible
independence.
The Program has plans to move to new facilities that will better accommodate the needs of
today’s patients and clients.
Where is my money going?
Money raised will be divided equally in two parts. First part to the Soldier On Fund and second
part to the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PMR) Program at Providence Care.
The Soldier On Fund provides resources and opportunities for
Canadian Forces
personnel with a disability to fully and actively participate in physical activity, recreation
and sport. This is accomplished through the provision of financial grants, creating awareness
and providing information and referral services to injured soldiers. The Soldier On program
serves as a collective effort to help the Canadian Forces care for its members in need.
Providence Care’s plan is relocate its Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
program into a
brand new hospital to be built on the
King Street West site.
Your support for the Kingston to Kandahar Spin-A-Thon will help make this new hospital a reality
and
your donation to the new building will be matched
9:1 by the Province.
