Canadian Forces Joint Support Group (CFJSG)
The Canadian Forces Joint Support Group (CFJSG) was stood up as a
formation on June 18, 2003 in response to a need for a military organization
that could provide support to Canadian Forces (CF) deployed
on joint operations all over the world. As a high-readiness formation,
the mission of the CFJSG is to field a deployable, operational-level Joint
Task Force Support Group for domestic or complex international missions,
up to and including mid-intensity war fighting. This formation
has been an essential element in theatre activation, rotation support,
intermediate staging, and closedown teams in numerous operations.
The CFJSG was initially composed of the CFJSG Headquarters (CFJSG
HQ) situated in Kingston, Ontario, and 1 Engineer Support Unit (1 ESU)
situated in Moncton, New Brunswick. As part of ongoing CF transformation
activities, the CFJSG now reports to Canadian Operational Support
Command (CANOSCOM) and has three units in its formation: 3 Canadian
Support Unit (3 CSU) and 4 Canadian Force Movements Control Unit
(4 CFMCU), both located in Montreal, and the Canadian Forces Postal
Unit (CFPU), which is located in Trenton. 1 ESU was transferred to
the new CANOSCOM Engineer Group effective 23 March 2007.
The CFJSG HQ’s mission is to provide a command and
control capability for the CFJSG and its assigned units in
order to provide support to deployed domestic, continental,
and expeditionary operations. CFJSG provides a robust
support capability through 3 CSG, 4 CFMCU and CFPU. The
combination of these sub-units under the functional control of the
CFJSG HQ framework provides the CF with a highly responsive, mission-
orientated organization capable of supporting the projection of
combat power.
Expeditionary operations usually create a need for significant deployed
operational-level support because the force is deployed far
from national infrastructure and often operates in austere areas
where local support is limited or non-existent. The CFJSG is able to
engage in co-operative support-related actions with alliance or
coalition partners, as well as the host nation, freeing tactical units
to conduct military operations. It bridges the strategic and operational
levels to ensure support is provided to deployed Joint Task
Forces. The CFJSG is able to provide operational-level support to CF
elements employed in campaigns and major actions within an area of
operation.
