Law Practice

Richard Pound is a senior partner in the Montréal office of Stikeman Elliott. His main areas of practice include tax litigation and negotiations with tax authorities on behalf of clients, in addition to general tax advisory work and commercial arbitration.

Mr. Pound is recognized by Lexpert, the Canadian legal directory, as a leading practitioner "repeatedly recommended" in the areas of the international commercial arbitration and tax litigation. He is included in the 2009 edition of The Best Lawyers in Canada and has also been included in the Lexpert/American Lawyer Media publication, A Guide to the Leading 500 Lawyers in Canada. He is recognized as having the highest rating ("AV") under the Martindale-Hubbell Peer Review Ratings.

Mr. Pound has been named to Time Magazine's 100 most influential people in the world for his relentless efforts to rid sport of performance- enhancing drugs.

In February 2008, he was awarded the Laureus "Spirit of Sport" Prize for his work as head of the World Anti-Doping Agency.

Professional Activities
  • Mr. Pound is a member of the Canadian Tax Foundation, l'Association de planification fiscale et financière, the Canadian Bar Association, the International Fiscal Association and the International Association of Practising Lawyers. He has lectured in taxation matters at McGill University in the Faculty of Law and in the McGill Centre for Continuing Education in the Chartered Accountancy program.
  • He publishes widely in legal publications and is Editor-in-Chief of Canada Tax Cases and the Stikeman Annotated Income Tax Act. He is the author of Pound's Tax Case Notes, which contain reviews of every reported tax case decided by the Canadian courts.
  • He is a member of the Quebec and Ontario Bars and is a Chartered Accountant in both jurisdictions. He was awarded the designation of Q.C. by the federal government in 1992 and of F.C.A. by Quebec in 2001.
  • He is Chancellor Emeritus of McGill University (1999 to present) and was Chair of the Board of Governors (1994 to 1999).
  • He was an Olympic finalist in swimming at the Rome Games in 1960 and British Empire and Commonwealth Games champion in 1962. He was Secretary and later President of the Canadian Olympic Committee. He is a member of the International Olympic Committee. He is Chairman of the Olympic Games Study Commission. He was Chairman of the IOC's Coordination Commission for the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and, from 1984 to 2001, directed, inter alia, all Olympic television negotiations, marketing and sponsorships.
  • He was the founding Chairman of the World Anti-Doping Agency (1999-2007) and remains a member of its Foundation board.
  • He is Chairman of the panel reviewing the governance of the Canadian Medical Association Journal (CMAJ).
  • He is the Honorary Consul General of Norway in Montréal.
  • He has served as a member of the Federal Court Bench and Bar Liaison Committee from 1999-2002 and from 2003 2007.
  • He is a director of the Canada's National History Society and of the RCMP Heritage Centre.
  • He is a director of the Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.
  • He is a member (2007 to present) of the International Council Arbitration for Sport.
  • He is the author or editor-in-chief of nine books, including two biographies, a history of his law firm, Canadian Facts and Date, High Impact Quotations and three Olympic related books.
Education

He graduated from McGill University (B.C.L. 1967); McGill University (Licentiate in Accounting 1964); Sir George Williams University - now Concordia University (B.A. 1963); and from McGill University (B.Comm. 1962).

In May 2008, Mr. Pound was appointed as Honorary Lieutenant-Colonel of the Canadian Grenadier Guards, was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Beijing Sport University in 2006, a Doctor of Sports Administration (honoris causa) from the Laurentian University in 2005, a Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) from the University of Western Ontario in June 2004, a Doctor of Laws (honoris causa) by the University of Windsor in 1997 and an Honorary Ph.D. by the United States Sports Academy in 1989. In September 2004, he was appointed a Chubb Fellow of Timothy Dwight College: Yale University.
